Aragones Extends Spanish Contract
Aragonese Luis has extended his contract as Spanish coach beyond the
2008 European Championships, it has been revealed.

The news comes as a surprise given the pressure on him from media and
fans to step down, sooner rather than later.

Defeats against Northern Ireland and Sweden have complicated Spain's
Euro 2008 qualification from group F, but the win over Argentina -
albeit in a friendly - seems to have reduced some of the pressure on the
coach.

The contract had been offered to Aragones before the defeat to Sweden,
and was signed this Tuesday, Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)
president Angel Maria Villar revealed.

The coach has also been given a raise, and will now earn 700,000 Euros a
year. Confirmation of the actual duration of the new contract is
unavailable at the moment, though the only natural extension could be up
to the 2010 World Cup.

“I know that Luis [Aragones] signed yesterday," said Villar on Wednesday
evening. "But an agreement had already been reached earlier."

Aragones is now set to continue at least until March, when the next
round of qualifiers take place. Spain host second placed Denmark - four
points ahead - on March 24, in what is almost a must-win game for
Aragones. Iceland visit them four days later.
