August 7, 2006 - If you've ever seen HBO's The Wire, you have a better understanding of Carmelo Anthony's early years in Baltimore.

"I grew up right in that neighborhood," Melo told IGN Sports. "Every time I watch that show it reminds me of where I came from."

B-More, one of the most dangerous, bullet-riddled cities in America. 269 murders in 2005. Almost seven times the rate of the rest of the country.

That's the 410 summed up in the only stats people seem to talk about, crime.

But there are other stats that give people hope. Silly as it seems, people find hope in hoops. They see someone like Melo make it out and it's like every basket he scores helps keep those dreams alive for another breath.

"Growing up in Baltimore I have seen a lot and it has really helped me mentally," says Melo. "That is why I just go hard every time out. I try to leave it out there on the court."

Ask kids today, and they say Melo put Baltimore on the basketball map, right down to the 410 stitched on his shoes.

Can you do the same for your hometown?

That's the concept behind NBA Street (Spring 2007; Xbox 360, PS3). Battle Melo and his crew 3-on-3 in the Cloverdale City game to earn respect. The ultimate goal is to beat NBA superstars from their hometown courts to the legendary parks across the land, finally putting your neighborhood on the map, just like Melo did for B-More.

August 7, 2006 - Electronic Arts' NBA Street has been off the courts for well over a year. But after its somewhat lengthy hiatus, it appears that the franchise was just resting up for something much, much bigger. Heading back to its roots for an inaugural showing on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, NBA Street will be headed to store shelves sometime next year.

IGN Sports Chief, Jon Robinson has secured the premiere announcement on the game, which you can find by lacing up your dunks and following this link. It may be light on the details for now, but you're not going to find what we have anywhere else.

  由EA旗下製作小組EA SPORTS BIG製作的籃球遊戲《NBA街頭籃球》系列一直是以誇張眩目的動作為主要賣點的,本系列在推出以後一直有著不錯的評價。日前,EA SPORTS BIG公佈了該系列的最新作品《NBA接頭籃球V4》。

  《NBA街頭籃球V4》將是一款強調爽快感和觀賞性的籃球遊戲,因此本作中會有很多非常花哨、甚至是荒唐的現實中不可能實現的動作。球員飛身而起,騰空十餘米後空接灌籃的場面在遊戲中是很容易就實現的,其他大量的街頭花式運球過人的數量就更是數不勝數了。

  本作中將由很多自定義選項,玩家不僅可以設計球員,同時也可以設計比賽場地。可以選擇地點、球場的地面、球網、籃球擋板的樣式等,超過1000種配件和多種豐富的選項讓玩家可以創造出獨一無二的球員。使用該球員後還可以進行生涯模式,在這一模式中玩家可以感受從普通球員向偉大巨星成長的道路。

EA wants you to know that the next version of NBA Street is a whole new animal, with a next-gen overhaul and dynamic gameplay. We're talking create-your-own-trick potential here. The list of potential new features is long, including voiceovers from real NBA stars, a brand new control scheme, and defense that is actually fun. And no, standing under the basket and goaltending shots is not fun.

We shot some questions over to Street Executive Producer Wil Mozell. It's still very early in development for the next Street (we're talking six months, give or take, before we see anything significant), but Mozell was able to talk about the new philosophy of Street and where EA is taking its game in the future. Dribbling in the streets for hours at a time, apparently, is not in the works.


IGN: We know that one of your goals on next-gen consoles is to do away with canned animations for tricks to create a more organic, create-your-own-trick street ball experience. How does this year's control scheme differ from previous games?
EA: It starts with the objective of putting the ball in the consumer's hand. That is the moment that consumers have never experienced in basketball games, and it is what they should expect with NG games. Rather than pressing all four trigger buttons along with a face button to get a "more advanced" animation, we want the user to use the face buttons to manipulate the character on the screen in real time.

IGN: The next NBA STREET is getting a defensive makeover, now you'll be able to get physical with offensive players instead of betting your ankles broken by a good ball-fake. What's your philosophy this year on the defensive side of the ball?
Mozell: Making "Defense as fun as Offense" was the key to the success of the first two versions of NBA STREET. This was mostly about blocking the crap out of your opponent in the air. However, we really haven't built on that since Vol. 2. Physical play gives the user more ways to get the ball from their opponent. I don't know anyone who has ever found "stealing" fun in a basketball game. You might as well roll dice to see what happens. We've found some simple ways to finally make defense FUN on the ground.


IGN: It was an interesting twist to hear that this iteration of NBA STREET would be a next-gen title only, a departure from EA's other games that hit every platform out there. Why the 360 and PS3, and what are you doing on these consoles that you couldn't do on other platforms?
Mozell: Consumers typically buy NBA STREET because of its fresh visuals and gameplay innovation, which is why it comes out every couple years. Two years between V3 and this iteration is a long time to wait for a current gen game that doesn't raise the bar. If we were doing current gen, there would be too many compromises with our next gen vision. We're focused on significantly increasing the fidelity of the user's control, and the "user feedback" they feel and see on the screen. That's what next gen platforms mean to NBA STREET.

IGN: The environments in these screenshots are huge, with multiple courts and things to do. When you play on the playground, there really is a playground. Also, you can see multiple games being played at once. Tell us about this shift to this "open world" and some of the activities we can do on each of these courts.
EA: The perception is definitely that of an open world. Truth be known, the quality of our environments would rival the detail in some of the best shooter and action titles out there. We believe it's the only way to make the consumer feel like these worlds are more real and life-like than ever before. However, it is critical that we focus on our core gameplay. NBA STREET isn't about buying a soda from a vending machine, or asking some dude on the street where to get a tattoo. It's about STREETBALL. So, that's what you will do on these courts. Fortunately, having multiple courts in one area allows us to provide a variety of challenges, as you would expect if you went to a real playground.

IGN: We can see you're not getting too much into specifics here Wil, so I'll ask just one more question. Can you tell us about the cost, how the controls work, online multiplayer, some new tricks and what NBA players lend their voices?
Mozell: [Crickets.]

IGN: Oh, and what's the release date?
Mozell: [Tumbleweed blows slowly across the road.]

October 31, 2006 - Don't call it NBA Street 4. EA's 3-on-3 hoops title has a new name: NBA Street Homecourt. Developed by EA Vancouver, the latest addition to the Street family will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360, dashing the hopes of the Wii faithful to see Mario dunking on Shaq.

The series previously focused on such legendary street courts as Rucker Park, but expands for the next generation of consoles by including the home courts of NBA players.

"NBA STREET Homecourt gives fans the opportunity to play where legends were made, and will be made," said Lead Producer, Dan Ayoub. "Every legendary player got his start somewhere and most of those roots are set in homecourts across the United States. The vision for the game's concept, visuals and gameplay all give a nod to those hometown courts, and will provide fans with an incredibly addictive and rewarding experience."

No release date has been announced for NBA Street Homecourt, but it is likely to arrive either in time for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in February or the NBA playoffs in June.

  畫面令人眼睛一亮的 PS3 新作《NBA 街頭鬥牛 4:主場傳說》,今日公佈將以卡梅羅.安東尼(Carmelo Anthony)擔任封面人物,這位表現出色的金塊隊球員,已經擔任過《NCAA March Madness 2004》和《勁爆美國職籃 2005》的封面人物,可以說是 EA 的御用明星。

  安東尼的籃球技巧奠基於巴爾的摩的運動場,這對他日後加入雪城大學(Syracuse University)籃球隊,進而展開 NBA 職業生涯有很大的影響。安東尼在雪城大學籃球隊時,曾榮獲2003「NCAA 最後四強」最有價值球員,以及 2003 年度最佳國家新人。

December 7, 2006 - Homecourt advantage is a powerful thing. From Cameron Indoor to the Palace at Auburn Hills to Heinz Field to Fenway Park, playing at home is like having an extra man on your side. The bottom line: We must protect this house!

That's what EA is banking on in the upcoming NBA Street Homecourt, where players will travel to the real homecourts of NBA Superstars and beat them at their own game. We sat down with Street art director Mike Young to get the inside drive on his upcoming title. We also scored exclusive screens and video of Melo and his homecourt of Cloverdale in Baltimore. IGN: "You want to play me at Cloverdale? You won't have a chance. That's my court," says Melo at the end of the new video. You could have went with a variety of home courts, like a famous court in Denver or even Syracuse, but you went with Melo's home court from when he was a kid. Why?
Mike Young: In the past we chose courts like Venice Beach and Rucker Park - places almost anyone who is a basketball fan and beyond would have heard of. This year we wanted to base them around players that everyone knew - why not show where NBA players set their roots before they became stars. We want it to feel inspirational to see a guy like Carmelo Anthony who is a huge star now and see the type of neighborhood that he grew up in. If he can come from a place like that, then I can do it too.

Also cool that when you ask Melo what his favorite court is - he will still say Cloverdale. He started to progress as a player there and cites it as the source of his toughness and edge. He is still really involved in that community and throws a charity game there every year.


This is Melo's court.

IGN: And no offense to Melo, but Cloverdale in Baltimore, Maryland looks a bit like any other playground court in America. Did you do anything to spruce it up for NBA Street or were you trying to recreate the court to be as realistic as possible?
Young: I'm glad you said that, because that is exactly what we were trying to achieve. We wanted to deliver an experience where Melo's homecourt - as well as your homecourt in story mode - looks equally impressive and photo real as the other courts. We want people to recreate the real life experience that Melo had starting with his roots set in Baltimore. Our goals were to set the bar visually for environments, to have the best player likeness in sports and to have the best lighting in sports - and I am really happy with where we got to.

And to answer your question about photorealism? Take a look at the reference shot we included and you can be the judge.


Cloverdale, B'More, Maryland.

IGN: I'm glad that you're glad. There's also a sign that says no bikes, drugs, alcohol or gambling. Are those rules strictly enforced?
Young: Maybe not the bike one as much as the others…but the fact that you could read that sign shows off the 360 degrees of detail we have on all of our environments. We were trying to collect and incorporate every detail we possibly could, be it shots of painted footprints of someone walking out of the bathroom to the real signs that hang on the fence. We looked at it from a micro level and included things like paint chips on the pavement, as well as from a macro perspective and making sure that all of the buildings surrounding the court were true to life as well.

IGN: There are six buckets on the Cloverdale court. Do you play on one court only or do the other hoops come into play?
Young: We actually went across the United States over a few months visiting every court we were considering for the game. We visited New York, LA, Baltimore, Washington, Coatesville PA, Chicago, Indiana, Philadelphia, Akron, Victoria BC, Louisville, Lexington…We went twice to some, including Cloverdale, to capture the true experience.

At each court, we would usually end up with 1,000 reference shots, 20 minutes of video, 10 minutes of audio and interviews people and players in the area and one of the most important pieces of information we got from players was which courts people actually play on.

At Cloverdale, they use the 2 side courts for tournaments, and the one closest to the gate for pick up. But if it's a really big game, then they use the main court.


No drugs, alcohol allowed. Off-the-heezy OK though.

IGN: How does one get a Melo tattoo?
Young: Well if it were me - I would use a screenshot as a reference photo and take it to my local tattoo artist. I personally like the "When the grass is cut the snakes will come out" that's on his inner arm and the Puerto Rico Flag on his hand. He also shows his loyalty to Baltimore with B'More in cursive on his neck.

IGN: In one sequence it appears as if Melo palms the basketball. Is that legal?
Young: So if you're worried about palming the ball is legal, what did you think about Rip Hamilton running on the backboard in our last trailer? Legal or not - the game this year is going to really put the ball into your hand. We have an innovative new control mechanic that is going to give you that ability. This game pushes the boundaries of plausible reality and is going to allow you to do some pretty spectacular things.

IGN: Melo is also wearing a sweet pair of Jordans. What other licensed gear is in NBA Street and can you send us some? (I'm a size 12.)
Young: Melo is a Jordan athlete and those are his new M3s actually - they just came out last month. We love to partner with premium brands - fans of our franchise love to wear Jordans and they are endemic to Streetball. I'll give Melo a call and see if he'll let you borrow his shoes.

IGN: Are you using the old leather NBA ball or the new pleather ball?
Young: Nope - we switched to the new one.

IGN: What are some of the other homecourts in the game?
Young: There are 10 courts in the game including Melo's homecourt in Baltimore, Rip Hamilton's in Coatesville PA - which we'll show you next week…can't tell you them all as I have to keep some secrets up my sleeves! Even courts that aren't the specific hometown court of an NBA player have the same sort of feel. We included the Goat this year, which is in NYC. It's intended to represent all the East Coast ballers and their homecourts - guys like Stephon Marbury and Rafer Alston came from this region. More like a homecourt than the big place like Rucker Park where all the tournaments happen.

IGN: Can you create your own homecourt? With palm trees and waterslides?
Young: This year, we really focused on quality over customization, which has been big for us in the past. Focus on delivering your homecourt that looks equally impressive and photo-real as the other courts and they are all inspired by real places from different parts of the country. We want people to look at the photos and say "That looks like a place I saw in New York, or LA or Pennsylvania." We felt that this court is a starting point for Anywhere, USA. We want the player to feel like this could have been in my town and feel passionate about putting it on the map.

IGN: Next time just say "No waterslides." Thanks for the time Mike. We're looking to posterizing you.
