Seemingly unwilling to be outdone by Google Glass, Microsoft has applied for a patent for glasses-based AR technology that may be implemented into future game development, Engadget reports.
The application describes sending verbal invitations for multiplayer games via a "head-mounted display device." It also mentions facial recognition, eye-tracking, depth-of-field, and user-specific information display technologies.
Concept art for glasses-based AR was shown in June in a previously leaked document concerning the Xbox One. Microsoft also filed a patent last November for a head-mounted display that augments scenarios like live sporting events. Considering the IllumiRoom project and the Xbox One's mandatory Kinect, developers interested in Microsoft's hardware might have a few more tools to work with than just a standard controller.
Xbox One Game DVR, a feature that will allow players to record gameplay directly through the console, will be exclusive to Gold subscribers, as will Skype and Smart Match matchmaking.
These features are in addition to the established parameters of Xbox Live Gold set on Xbox 360: Premium entertainment apps like Netflix will still require it, as will online multiplayer and those coming live NFL broadcasts. Microsoft hasn't said if self-publishing will require Gold.
The Xbox One is slated to launch this November for $500 in North America, €500 in Europe and £430 in the United Kingdom. The Xbox One will initially be available in 21 different markets
Microsoft unXboxed the Xbox One in a new video this morning, showcasing everything that's bundled in the console's Day One Edition, which we now know includes the Xbox One Chat headset. The company previously said the Xbox One would not include a pack-in headset, but in today's video Microsoft's Major Nelson said both the Day One and Standard Editions do come with the accessory.
Specific to the Day One bundle are a commemorative controller with a chrome D-pad in lieu of the Standard Edition's regular controller, special packaging, and a code for a Day One achievement, should you want to get cracking ASAP on the new Gs. The Standard and Day One bundles, which share a price of $500, both include the new Kinect, HDMI cable, power supply, and Quick Start guide - oh, and the console ... nearly forgot that One.
Microsoft has yet to pin a date on the Xbox One, but we know it's due in November. Its rival in the shiny new console race, the PS4, has an even wider window of "this holiday."
