BORDERLANDS 3 EASTER EGG DISCOVERED IN BATTLEBORN DLC

Members of the Battleborn subreddit and official Battleborn forums have discovered strange signals being emitted from portals that would spawn in Battleborn DLC operations. The combined message that players found, collected from six operations, reads:

"Visit Prometea, Children of the Vault, We Are Not on Pandora Anymore, Tannis Is Not What She Seems, Do Not Open the Vaults"

Battleborn Creative Director Randy Varnell chimed in on the forums and Reddit to confirm the players who had decoded the message — which required reversing audio in some cases — were correct in their methods.

"Prometea" is not a known name in the Borderlands universe, but the decoded word is one letter off from Promethea, a harsh planet in Borderlands lore where the Atlas corporation discovered and then used alien technology to improve its ships and weapons.

Tannis is the surname of Borderlands character Patricia Tannis. An expert on the alien race of Eridians and the franchise's Vaults, Tannis is a key figure in the first Borderlands' campaign and also appears in Borderlands 2 as a member of the Crimson Raiders. Some of those involved in the Easter egg hunt have theorized the message comes from the Eridians as a warning to players about Tannis.

Pitchford also previously this year said that Borderlands 3 won't likely come to the Nintendo Switch after discussions with Nintendo "stopped for some reason." Gearbox previously said last year that Borderlands 3 nods would be included in Battleborn's DLC, and Varnell believes all of the Easter eggs released so far have been found now.

Gearbox said it was ready to start developing Borderlands 3 in 2015 and later confirmed that work had begun at PAX East last year.

Don't Expect Borderlands 3 on Nintendo Switch, Gearbox CEO Says

"I do not see that as happening."

Don't hold your breath for a Nintendo Switch version of Borderlands 3, or whatever the next mainline installment in the series is called.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said on Twitter today, as spotted by IGN, that discussions with Nintendo fell apart "for some reason."

"I do not see that as happening," he said to a fan who asked about a Switch version of Borderlands 3. "We were talking to Nintendo, but that stopped for some reason. They have other priorities."

Pitchford confirmed Borderlands 3 in April 2016 during PAX East. "Obviously, there is going to be another Borderlands," he said at the time, explaining that it may not be called that.

Borderlands 3 was originally announced in January 2015, at which time Pitchford referred to it as "the big one." Parent publisher Take-Two later clarified that this game is being developed "specifically for next-gen," indicating it will launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as presumably PC.

The Borderlands franchise debuted in 2009 with the original Borderlands and its sequel Borderlands 2 arrived in 2012. That game is the best-selling title in 2K's history and has sold "well over" 12 million copies.

A third game, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, was released in 2014 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before being ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 through the Handsome Collection in 2015.
