'Tomb Raider' reboot movie in the works
Angelina Jolie starred as action heroine Lara Croft in two films released in the early noughties
A new
Tomb Raider movie is in the works.
MGM has teamed up with production company GK Films with a view to developing a new action franchise based on the popular video games,
The Hollywood Reporter has announced.
The
Tomb Raider reboot will be produced by GK Films founder
Graham King, whose numerous producer or executive producer credits include
Argo,
The Departed,
The Aviator and
Traffic. Development on the new
Tomb Raider film will begin immediately.
Casting has yet to be announced, but the reboot is unlikely to star
Angelina Jolie, who played heroine Lara Croft in two previous movies based on the video games, 2001's
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life. Those films took over $430 million (£280 million) between them at the box office worldwide.
Meanwhile, the
Tomb Raider video game series has recently been rebooted too with a new game simply titled
Tomb Raider. Since its release on March 5, it has already sold 3.4 million copies worldwide. Lara Croft, an uncommonly adventurous and glamorous globe-trotting archaeologist, first appeared in a 1996 video game, also called
Tomb Raider, that was available on PS1 and Sega Saturn consoles.

Tomb Raider's reboot as a video game seems to have worked out well, so Crystal Dynamics is comfortable talking about their reboot plans for the film, too.
Speaking to
Variety, Darrell Gallagher said his studio is working with GK Films, producers of "Rango" and "The Departed." Gallagher's remarks stress that whatever the next
Tomb Raider film is, it'll be consistent with the tone of the game releasing today. "We didn't want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider' films," he said. "They are working from this new take that we've given them."
A rebooted "Tomb Raider" movie, departing from the voluptuous Angelina Jolie portrayal of Lara Croft to a steelier, yet vulnerable adventurer, has been talked about before.
ComingSoon.net discussed the project with Graham King (he runs GK Films)
back in 2011.
