Warner Bros. Courts Mel Gibson to Direct 'Suicide Squad' Sequel

Mel Gibson is mulling joining the DC Extended Universe … as a director.

Warner Bros. is courting the actor-director to helm Suicide Squad 2 and the sides are early in talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. No official offer has been made nor has any commitment.

Sources say that Gibson is familiarizing himself with the material. But the studio is not being passive and is also looking at other directors, Daniel Espinosa among them.

David Ayer directed the initial outing, which featured an all-star cast that included Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The 2016 movie faced some hurdles during production and was met with somewhat polarizing response, but grossed $745 million worldwide, enough to put a sequel on the fast-track.

Ayer is now developing Gotham City Sirens, a project that reunites him with Robbie and focuses on the female villains of the DC Universe.

Suicide Squad told the story of such villains as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences.

The fact that Gibson, riding high thanks to his Oscar-nominated war movie Hacksaw Ridge, is being courted by Warners marks a remarkable turnaround for the actor-director. His image took a hit in the 2000s after a drunk driving arrest and anti-Semitic comments, and he found himself losing studio work.

Gibson did nab a cameo in The Hangover: Part II — a movie made by Warner Bros. — but a backlash within the studio and parts of the cast ended with him being unceremoniously dropped.

But Hacksaw Ridge is seen as a major turning point for Gibson. His biopic of conscientious objector Desmond Doss nabbed six Oscar nominations, including one for Gibson for best director, and has made $164 million worldwide to date.

He now finds himself fielding a slew of offers, both from studios and indies. He is in talks to join Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg for Paramount's Daddy’s Home 2, and is reteaming with Hacksaw Ridge actor Vince Vaughn for gritty crime indie Dragged Across Concrete.

Justin Kroll of Variety made some calls to sources after tonight's big news and sent out some updates via Twitter:

華納兄弟影業與 DC 娛樂在去年帶來的反派集合電影《自殺突擊隊》（Suicide Squad）雖然評價一樣沒有太好，但仍在全球開出了 7.45 億美元的票房。而在原導演大衛艾耶（David Ayer）接下另一部以女性反派為主軸的《Gotham City Sirens》後，華納兄弟影業也開始尋找續集的接手導演，日前又出現了新名字。

根據 THR 報導，西班牙導演豪梅寇勒特瑟拉（Jaume Collet-Serra）是目前華納兄弟影業鎖定執導《自殺突擊隊 2》的首要人選，並且有望在 2018 年中開拍。華納最早物色的導演包括有梅爾吉勃遜（Mel Gibson），但後來因腳本問題推延製作時程，梅爾吉勃遜也因此無暇配合。

豪梅寇勒特瑟拉在去年執導了由布萊克蕾芙莉（Blake Lively）主演的《絕鯊島》（The Shallow），雖然整體規模較小，但娛樂效果十足，仍在觀眾間締造了優秀口碑。其他代表作還包括《孤兒怨》（Orphan），以及與連恩尼遜（Liam Neeson）合作的《狙擊陌生人》（Unknown）、《空中救援》（Non-Stop）、《一夜狂奔》（Run All Night），兩人第四度合作作品《The Commuter》將在 2018 年上映。

Gavin O’Connor is on board to write the sequel to “Suicide Squad,” and is also in talks to direct the film that stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto.

The movie is a top priority at Warner Bros. and looks to be one of the two DC properties (the other being New Line’s “Shazam!”) to begin production next year. Given the ensemble’s busy schedule, the shoot wasn’t expected to start until fall of 2018. So while there’s still time, the studio is eager to get someone on board to pen a script.

Zach Penn wrote a previous draft.

Following the news that David Ayer, who directed the first movie, would not be back, the open directing job has been one of the biz’s most highly-touted gigs.

Ayer directed the last supervillain tentpole, which was a huge hit for Warners — despite earning negative reviews — bringing in more then $745 million worldwide.

O’Connor was already on a shortlist that included filmmakers Jaume Collet-Serra and Mel Gibson, both of whom were considered the studio’s prime targets before they decided to tackle other projects. O’Connor has always seemed like a logical choice, given his history with the studio. He most recently directed the action-drama “The Accountant,” which Warner Bros. is already developing a sequel for. O’Connor is set to return to direct and Ben Affleck will be back to star.
