※UPDATE: Steam上での発表によると、発売時期はホリデーシーズンになるそうです。

portal同half life 2 o既關係只係portal係用half life 2個source engine開發出o黎,同包埋入orange box,其實兩者關係不大。

Redesigning Portal: Valve’s Artist Speaks

Designing a character for a game is no easy task. Even little nuances such as a character's shoes or hairstyle can affect how players perceive their hero. Redesigning a character brings additional challenges because players already have a set of expectations for established characters. Designers will go through hundreds of concepts before settling on a final design for their character. Valve's concept artist, Matt Charlesworth, explains how that process is working for Portal 2.



From The Beginning

“We sort of agreed that as a character Chell was really successful in the first Portal. She fit into the world really well and complemented it without the distractions that a more flashy character would bring. She served a utilitarian purpose for that game, but at the same time when we started out on Portal 2 we weren't sure if we wanted to bring her back. So we explored a few other characters before returning to Chell.
“Right from the beginning, we were constrained to replicate the character that was in the first game. Later on, we decided that we were probably missing a trick by not having Chell present, so we moved her back into that role. We were trying to do different things. Some of the images started with a sporty look – almost like motorcycle gear. Very different from the first aesthetic, even though we were still going for clean and simple. We were playing around with proportion as well, trying to play a lot more with extreme feminine proportions and a totally different color scheme.

“We explored changing Chell’s nationality for a little bit. Nobody really knew what Chell was in the first game. She kind of had a hint of Japanese ethnicity to her, but we were still not quite sure if we were going to keep her or make her a new character. In the end, the things that were successful were the more minimal, clean, utilitarian looks. Nothing was on there for fashion. The constraints we had were that this girl was supposed to be dressed by machines, so any markings on the suit would have been on there for readability by the computer. She was never supposed to look as if she'd been designed. But that's something we fought with – to make her still appealing to the player, but not look over designed. Anything that doesn't serve a real purpose on the character tends to get cut.



Throwing Out Ideas

“We played around with some different machine-read imagery, and what extra things you might have on a suit like this, but we’re leaning away from the bar code design now, because it seems like it's been done quite a bit before, and originality is something I really associate with Portal.

“The stuff that was more successful was the really minimal approach, and that's sort of led us to this concept. This just seemed to strike a chord with everyone, because it really seemed like it belonged in the Portal world. It made her look physically capable, but at the same time, there is a vulnerability about her. That's what is attractive to everybody.

“The 06 is an arbitrary graphic put on there. We're trying to de-humanize the character a little bit. That's something that was continually coming up with some of the other concepts suited to the prisoner number system – that constant dehumanization of these test subjects."


Work In Progress

“This is not supposed to look like a sexy Marvel superhero suit. It’s supposed to look like it was designed without any thought of making her look attractive. We don't want to make her be unattractive, but we want to balance that out. Chell is a test subject, so she should look like one. Not a prisoner or a janitor or something. We also want people to remember the character this time around. Before I started working on Portal 2, I barely remembered the character from the first game.

“The hat came up sort of halfway through the concepting phase. It just seemed to strike a chord with everyone. It's something that always makes me think of test pilots – people who were subjected to testing and extreme conditions. It serves a second purpose too, because if there's a graphic on it that's constantly readable from all angles then there can be graphics on the hat that are trackable by the computers in the world. That sort of serves the fiction of her being tested by GLaDOS. Also it keeps the hair out of her eyes.

“We’re still not entirely sure what we're doing with the spring heels. They were always something that was in Portal 1, and some of us are attached to them, and some of us aren't, so I’ve experimented with how we can do with them right this time around, and how we would go about replacing them. Everything should look 10 times better than the first Portal, that's the goal.”

Designing For Two

“We went through a phase of putting stuff up and deciding what the direction was. The co-op bots, at the very beginning our concepts had a very Westworld feel. We wanted them to look human, but feel robotic. They eventually developed into being these far more graphic, very industrial looking robots. We took turrets and the personality spheres and integrated them into the designs. There's so much personality in Portal that we thought we could almost tell a story with their design and get more use out of the art than we already had.

“We drew them holding hands because it just kind of describes the whole co-op idea, if slightly tongue-in-cheek. Portal’s got a sense of humor. It's quirky, but it shows that one of the biggest things that is important to Portal 2 will be that you're playing with a friend. It's one of those weird things, where somebody just kind of did it, and we had the sort of team moment where we were like “yeah that’s pretty cool.”

Valve cancels Portal 2 press event at E3 and it's amazing

I'm deep in E3 planning, so when any one event gets canceled or shuffled, I'm not entirely pleased. But Valve, it can do whatever it wants.
See, it had a Portal 2 press conference event taking place on Monday, June 14. Now it's not happening; it's been canceled. Valve says that it has replaced the event with a "surprise," but doesn't go into any details. I'll find out, I'm sure -- I'm already penciled in to see Portal 2 (and whatever else they'd like to show me -- begin speculation now) behind-closed-doors.
But why is this so amazing? It's how they canceled it. The full email, in all of its glory, after the jump.

Confirmation of which came at the end of a note from the developer, which also confirmed it had delayed the game into 2011.
The note said:
“To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD’S SAKE*** surprise…”
So there you have it. Not Left 4 Dead 2: Episode One, not Half Life 2: Episode Three, not Half Life 3 or Source Engine 2, as we were told.
Let the speculation end. Once. And for all.

E3 2010: Portal 2 Coming to PS3

One of the biggest surprises of the Sony E3 Media Briefing came when Gabe Newell walked onto stage and announced that Portal 2 will be available for PlayStation 3. "I've been very outspoken about my thoughts on the current generation," Newell deadpanned. "Kevin Butler was introduced to me backstage as the VP of sharpening things."

Portal 2 will now ship in 2011 and the PS3 version will support Steamworks in several ways, including game updates, community features, and connecting players to the Steam Cloud.

A trailer for the game was then shown, in which a dilapidated science center in the jungle began reconstructing itself by some invisible force. As the trailer ended, GLaDOS teased the audience. "I think we can put our difference behind us—for science, you monster."

Valve to Deliver Blockbuster Sequel With Steamworks Support


June 15, 2010 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises and leading technologies, today announced that it will deliver Portal 2 on the PlayStation 3 platform simultaneously with previously announced platforms. The PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will be the only console version to include Steamworks.

"When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform's biggest critics," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers. Portal 2 is the sequel to the title named "Game of the Year" 2007 by over 30 publications around the world. Portal 2 promises to break new ground in next generation gaming by expanding the award-winning recipe of innovative gameplay, immersive story, and creative inclusion of music while also introducing multiplayer co-op game modes.

On the PlayStation 3 Portal 2 will be supported by Steamworks, a complete suite of game features and services including auto updates, community features, downloadable content, and more. Previously deployed on the PC and the Mac, Valve's Steamworks development platform will make it possible to deliver the higher level of service gamers have come to expect.

When you get the likes of Valve’s Gabe Newell appear on stage in the middle of Sony’s Keynote event it’s already newsworthy in itself but when its then confirmed that Portal 3 is indeed set to hit the Playstation 3 and, as if that were not enough, that PS3 owners are promised the best version of Portal 2 to appear on any console then, well, that’s beyond mere news – its something far, far more special.

Valve has labelled PS3 "the most open console" on the market - following a deal with Sony to bring both Portal 2 and features of its Steam service to the platform.

Valve head honcho Gabe Newell appeared at the Sony E3 conference yesterday in Los Angeles to break the news. He shocked attendees by claiming that the PS3 edition of Portal 2 was the best console version available.

It was some turnaround for a man who once called the machine "a waste of everybody's time" - something for which he later apologised to owners of the console.

However, having failed to get its Steamworks service onto Xbox 360, it appears Valve's affections may be shifting.

"We're a huge fan of open platforms in general," Valve's Erik Johnson told CVG today. "That's something that we feel like is the right thing for customers. The PS3 looks like the most open of the consoles right now.

"Fundementally, we want all of our customers to be able to interact with each other - especially with a game like Portal 2, where people want to tell each other about Portal and have fun together.

"The work we're going to do on Steam [on PS3], feature-by-feature, we don't know exactly what that's going to look like today. But we want to create that same kind of thing on PS3 [as we have on PC] - where people can talk to each other, know what they've played."

When we asked how long ago Valve decided to develop for Sony's platform, he added:

"In terms of timing, it was a while ago. The thing for us that made it make the most sense was talking to [Sony] about Steam.

"We shipped Team Fortress 2 on PC and the Xbox. We shipped over 120 updates on the PC and we've shipped less than five on the Xbox. That's something that we feel like we've done a pretty poor job on and we don't know how to fix it.

"There's problems with shipping that many updates on the 360. For us, we kind of need to solve a problem with PS3 customers and hopefully Portal 2 does it.

"We want to make sure we're doing it right and they're gettin the kind of value welike to provide to our customers. We're not interested in giving them a less than stellar experience."

And in big news for PS3 fans - especially those that want to see the likes of Left4Dead on the platform - Johnson told us that older Valve titles could now be migrating onto Sony's device.

"Sure, it's possible," he said.
"We're focused on Portal 2 right now though."

Can't blame them. It looks ace.

The game's out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next year.
