Lumines Electronic Symphony Soundtrack List Electronic. Published: 15:00, 01/02/2012 by Staff. Lumines Electronic Symphony Review: Still a Dazzling Mix of Sight And Sound (Vita) It demonstrates that a solid puzzle game doesn't need to re-write the rules. By Jose Otero 02/14/2012 For puzzle game fiends like myself, the original Lumines injected a massive amount of sound-appeal into a pretty standard genre. It's not that catchy music didn't exist in puzzle games before its PSP debut (or have their own brand of audio/visual charm either), but no game in the genre I played before mixed the two together so well. Lumines exists in a delicate framework: one where each piece of the experience complements the other, and where developer Q Entertainment shows its impressive music-bending muscle. Take away the quirky audio samples, funky music, or puzzle mechanics, and the other components just wouldn't hold my interest. It's an example of a game that pulses to a special beat and, similar to any top-notch puzzler, one where the mechanics shine after repeated play. While the gameplay exists in a careful balance of visuals and sound, Lumines is also one of the few games where I'm resistant to change; and a lot of that has to do with how well the mechanics of the first game worked. So I'm grateful that Lumines: Electronic Symphony doesn't try to complicate its familiar block-matching formula with unnecessary additions. For the uniformed: colored block clusters (consisting of four squares and up to two color tones) drop from the top of the screen and can be rotated left or right. The end goal is for players to match up four squares of the same color and clear away blocks before they pile up to the top of the screen. A scrolling timeline (that passes from left to right) erases matching block clusters, and adds them to your score. A helpful list of colored blocks to the left of the playing field shows the pattern of the next three incoming pieces, so there's plenty of room for strategy as well. While the gameplay in ES technically isn't "new," the developers at Q Entertainment add fresh components to the mix. The first is the new Shuffle Block, a weird little tool that randomly shifts the color of all blocks connected to it -- something that either can turn a nightmare scenario of non-matching squares around or ruin a potential block-busting combo in seconds. This random element causes you to think twice before dropping a Shuffle Block into the field, because you can't be too sure what's going to happen if you do. It complements the pre-existing Chain Block -- a special power-up that eliminates all like-colored blocks connected to it -- in that it adds a fresh layer of chaos whose outcome can't always be determined. Avatars have also received a little attention in ES, and now provide a set of reusable and helpful power-ups for players. Every avatar has two abilities: one that affects a single-player session and the other for multiplayer. For example the default avatar, named Boy, can conjure a Chain Block at will or grant the Invisible Man ability in multiplayer -- a skill that changes one of your opponent's upcoming blocks into a transparent one instead. The only requirement to use an Avatar ability is energy, which gets replenished over time or by tapping the rear touch panel during play. With 10 Avatar abilities in total, players can experiment and find one that suits their playstyle best. Other touch controls weave their way into ES's fold, and work surprisingly well, but aren't forced on. You can switch between using buttons or touch screen as gracefully as you wish, or tackle all the pattern-matching tasks using a hybrid of the two. Perhaps ES's most endearing aspect is its presentation -- one that consists of barrage of unique art direction and a suite filled with electronic sounds. The playlist presented in ES pushes past the days of Lumines 2, when it became accepted that the only way to grab more outside attention was to include more mainstream music. ES ditches this kind of pandering completely and embraces a soundtrack filled with decades of electronic music through its many permutations. Oddly enough, listening to Benny Benassi's pulsing beats in "Good Girl" or Deep Dish's melody in "The Future of the Future" aren't my typical audio entertainment, but they've both slowly grown on me to point that I can't resist their electronic charms. Of course, there are occasional songs I can't bring myself to care for, but creating my own playlists cuts around that issue, and lets me set the mood from track to track with an intuitive cover flow-style interface. The overall effort and production value add new levels of visual detail to Lumines' familiar gameplay, but a few things hold ES back from greatness. The lack of online multiplayer really hurts, confining this great puzzle game to one that can only be played via local multiplayer -- a shame considering all of the social features and fancy acronyms built into Vita's innards. Also, while tapping the rear touch panel refills Avatar energy during gameplay and keeps your fingers moving constantly, the sounds generated in response don't always fit the song you're playing; something that sits at odds with how Q Entertainment usually tackles similar ideas in their music games. And one where usually every sound introduced still complements the core song in some graceful way. Small flaws aside, ES is an incredible title. It rekindles that old Lumines flame you may have ignored over the past few years and presents a unique puzzle game full of distinct charm. It's a sequel that doesn't have to reinvent the wheel or try to be too different and deserves major props for taking electronic music even further by adding many notable contributors to the soundtrack. While the lack of online multiplayer stings, this puzzler continues to be something special if you're willing to give it a chance.
