The amazing story behind Syphon Filter is not just that it transformed from a no-name shooter to a huge franchise hit in just a few months. Or that it kept selling month after month without pause during 1999. Or that some people preferred to play it over Metal Gear Solid. The game was almost cancelled while in development, and without the flamboyant Kelly Flock's full support on the project, we wouldn't even know what the words Syphon and Filter would be doing next to each other.

The fact is, we do have Syphon Filter, exclusively on the PS2. Sony Computer Entertainment America recently announced the fourth game in the series, Syphon Filter Omega Strain, and this time we're in for a completely new adventure. Developer Sony Bend (formerly Eidetic) has been slaving over the fourth, and apparently, final game in the series, which supports both broadband and dial-up online services; it is also a single-player game for those without online connections. Sony Bend is emphasizing both aspects of the game, as both play modes share the same levels, which can be approached differently when played online.

In both, the first big surprise is that players won't play as Gabriel Logan, the star of each previous iteration of Syphon Filter. Instead, they'll access a deep and detailed create-a-player mode in which they create their own character and, using strategic squad-based tactics, progress through levels. Likening the game to Phantasy Star Online's single and online player capabilities, Sony Bend's executives explained that the single player mode will be rich and rewarding, but it'll be even deeper and more rewarding for those who venture online.

Sony Bend's online technology is very flexibly, using peer-to-peer technology, which is not reliant on a server base like SOCOM: Navy Seals. The developer wants to encourage the online aspects of team play, which change the game. For instance, if you reach a blown up stairwell in single-player mode you cannot get past it. But with a teammate, you can assist the other up past it. The second player can then grab the above ledge, climb up it, and then reach his or her hand down to pull up the other player.

Omega Strain also have new moves. You can pick up bodies, carry them, and hide them. Enemy AI is equal to you in all aspects: It can climb things, has incredibly sensitive hearing, it leans around corners, and ducks beneath objects. The AI can team up and search areas too.

During skirmishes, players can interact with objects in the environment to alter the balance of power. Players can destroy power grids, knocking out lights or security cameras. An expansive realtime map, via a wireframe grid of the environment, will appear in 3D, and show you where you are in relation to opponents and allies.

While many new facets have been introduced to Omega Strain, Sony Bend has not by any means forgotten the origins of Syphon Filter, or why it was such a success. Players can still perform all of the tried-and-true moves, including the running strafe, evasive roll and headshots. The developers also have tried to blend equal amounts of stealth and straight-up action better than any of the previous Syphon Filter games.

Omega Strain boasts a powerful arsenal of more than 100 different weapons, though players will only carry a few at a time. Each weapon has its own class. Players can carry primary and secondary firearms, a melee weapon and a sidearm. You can select armor, ammo, grenade type and more. As players progress they unlock new weapons. Melee weapons include such items as knives and tasers, and if you reach a very high ranking, you'll get Gabe's classic taser.

It's very likely that players can use chat functions and message one another, attach a USB keyboard, and use the USB headset for full voice recognition during the game.

Omega Strain takes the war on terror online. Official PlayStation 2 Magazine has got everything you need to know.

God knows, we've been patient enough. Years passed as we wrung our hands and tutted gloomily. Still, no word came. Now, with terrorists threatening world security and a deadly virus sweeping the globe, it seems the time is finally right for the return of Syphon Filter. But before we get into it, cast your minds back to the climax of the original game: you're psyched up for the final battle against a sausage-munching terrorist when Gabe Logan stumbles across a cache of gas grenades. One well-timed throw later and - gak! - it's all over for Fritz. Counter-terrorism suddenly got a whole lot cooler. Blending gung-ho action with a smattering of realism might've made Syphon Filter look like a Metal Gear copyist, but its lock-on targeting and instant-death headshots marked the original game out as an innovator.

Now, following three games on PSone, the series is finally ready to hit PS2. But the really explosive news is that it's online enabled. Due out across the pond this winter, Syphon Filter: Omega Strain features a networked multiplayer mode and a massive solo campaign for those of you living beyond broadband's techno-tentacles. The other info-bang is that Omega Strain is being pitched as the final instalment in the franchise, and Gabe Logan - star of the previous games - isn't playable. Instead, you create an agent from scratch and then tackle the entire game offline or log onto the infobahn for some networked gunplay.

We've seen Omega Strain in action and, although the palette looks as muted as these screenshots suggest, the rain-lashed urban setting is suitably moody. Each of the levels is said to be double the size of past equivalents, with multiple paths and an open-ended approach to gameplay ensuring Omega Strain should suit stealth fetishists and gun nuts alike.

Recent advances in the sneak 'n' shoot genre clearly haven't gone unnoticed by the development team at Sony Bend. Taking a cue from Splinter Cell, you can create cover by shooting out light sources and lug around the bodies of 'neutralised' hostiles. The real hook, though, is the way the gameplay changes online. Here, the action involves teams of four working together. You can use the SOCOM headset to communicate with the other players, which is crucial given that success hinges on your ability to operate as a unit.

In the online game you can only access certain areas using the help of teammates. On the simplest level this will entail flicking switches and operating security cameras, but there will also be specific co-operative moves, such as the 'buddy climb' used to boost another player over an obstacle. Better still, you're encouraged to improvise - using one player to distract a guard while the other sneaks past, for instance. Of course, the terrorists will also be operating en masse - employing squad-based tactics to outflank your team and defend key objectives.

A typical mission involves storming a heavily guarded building and rescuing hostages, with varying rewards on offer dependent on how long it takes you to complete the level, and the amount of civilian casualties incurred. Filter fans will be pleased to learn that joining Logan will be several familiar faces: Lian Xing, Teresa Lipan and Lawrence Mujari will act as team leaders for the covert agency you'll be working for, along with six new characters. Now for the bad news. Omega Strain also sees the return of Mara Aramov. For the uninitiated, she's a deadly assassin very much in the mould of Nina from 24. Just as well then, that the game boasts an arsenal of 100 weapons, with agents able to carry four at a time. We also understand that the lock-on system will now be sensitive enough to allow you to target specific body parts with ease.

The original Syphon Filter was a sleeper hit on PSone, but since then the series has grown in stature. As a single-player game Omega Strain is all but certain to offer an enthralling slice of terrorist plugging. The addition of online co-operative play is little short of mouth-watering. See? Sometimes you really do get what you deserve. Now, about Colony Wars Online...

由SCE預定於2003年11月24日在北美、明年2月在日本推出發售的PS2網路FPS大作「Syphon Filter：Omega Strain」，遊戲中玩家除了可以自行設計角色的身高、年齡、體重、髮型、髮色、服裝等各種外型之外，遊戲中還準備有超過100件以上的槍枝武器供玩家使用。而玩家在戰鬥時，可同時持有雙槍進行戰鬥，另外還可再帶4種隨身攜帶武器及格鬥武器，同時敵我雙方角色的AI方面也都更加強化，帶給玩家更刺激的遊戲挑戰。

另外在這款遊戲中的網路模式「SOCOM」裡，玩家雖然無法互相進行對戰，但卻可以一起協力合作來挑戰遊戲的關卡任務，同時每個任務都會對玩家成績給予評價排行，讓玩家瞭解自己目前的成績排名如何。

I think many idea of MGS2 is copied from syphon filter too !!
for example : first person view shoot , snake can shoot when running , griping & climbing
