Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Announces Batman: Arkham Knight

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady Studios’ conclusion to the series of award-winning, best-selling titles Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Batman: Arkham Knight is based on DC Comics’ core Batman license and will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. The game is scheduled for release worldwide in 2014.

In the explosive finale to the Arkham series, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever. Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady's uniquely designed version of the Batmobile, which is drivable for the first time in the franchise. The addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the Batman Arkham series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City.

As we previously told you yesterday, Warner Bros officially confirmed that Batman: Arkham Knight is the title of Rocksteady‘s next gen Batman game.

There’s a lot of new information in the press release, including a couple of interesting statements. First up is Sefton Hill, Game Director at Rocksteady Studios, who claimed that the power of next generation hardware finally unshackled their vision of Batman.

Rocksteady Studios is doing an enormous amount of work with the final chapter of our Batman: Arkham tirlogy so that fans can truly experience what it truly means to be Batman. We’re happy to develop the game for the next generation platforms, which enabled us to bring to life some design elements that we had imagined since the very beginning, such as the Batmobile (which actually augments Batman’s capabilities), and the incredibly complex and detailed new Gotham City.

Martin Tremblay, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, added:

Batman: Arkham Knight is the highest point of this extraordinary franchise, and we’ll give players the biggest and most impressive title yet. Rocksteady Studios is continuing to focus on the excellent gameplay for which they’re renown, while developing an exciting new experience for all Batman fans.

The biggest news is, clearly, that the Batmobile will finally be available to roam the streets of what is being touted as the biggest representation of Gotham City yet to appear in a videogame. The very first CG trailer also just appeared, showing Two-Face, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow and Penguin among the featured villains. We’ll surely know a lot more as soon as Game Informer’s latest edition reaches the public.

Batman: Arkham Knight's Gotham is 5x as big as Arkham City's

Gliding now better than ever thanks to more open space, Rocksteady says.

Batman: Arkham Knight's Gotham City is "roughly five times" larger than the one built for Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady has revealed – although according to the developer, it isn't just about the size.
"As we've said before with Arkham City, it's not about the scale as much as the detail," game director Sefton Hill explained in the latest issue of Game Informer. "We want to make sure the world is rich and full of interesting things to do. We’re not trying to create the biggest open-world game ever. We are trying to create a really rich, vibrant, dense open world."
Arkham Knight's introduction of the Batmobile has also led to a "complete rethinking" of Gotham, the magazine reports, with ramps, barriers and even other cars used to provide additional hazards.
More thugs litter the streets, too, with between three-four times the amount of enemies roaming Arkham Knight's Gotham than Arkham City's, while additional open space between buildings makes gliding better than it's ever been before.
"Arkham City was quite claustrophobic," Hill says. "Here we have a lot more negative space between the buildings so it’s much easier and more enjoyable to glide around."
Batman: Arkham Knight was announced earlier today and sees Batman returning to face some of "Gotham's most feared enemies".
The game is due to release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC later this year.
