Gamescom: Sony Announces Resogun for PS4

A fast-paced shoot 'em up from acclaimed developer.

Sony has announced Resogun, exclusively for the PS4, a colorful a space shoot 'em up from Super Stardust Delta developer Housemarque. IGN gave Super Stardust Delta an amazing 9.5 in February 2012.
In a post on the PlayStation.Blog, Housemarque's Mikael Haveri wrote that Resogun is a spiritual successor to the Stardust series, but will add a "new twist" to the genre. "The cylindrical gameplay is closer to old school 2D shooters, and one interesting side effect of that is that the world has gravity now. You actually expect things to fall down, there are ground enemies… these elements completely change the playfield compared to the Stardust series."
Correction: We initially reported Resogun would be available on the PS Vita. It was actually only streamed to the Vita from a PS4.

RESOGUN was one of the biggest surprises of Gamescom. Featuring rich visuals and engaging gameplay mechanics, Housemarque is set to cement their legacy when it launches on the PlayStation 4. We recently got in touch with various individuals over at Housemarque - with answers compiled by Harry Krueger, Lead Programmer of RESOGUN.
We asked him how the 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and unified architecture of the PS4 is helping the game to run at a slick sixty frames per second and glorious 1080P resolution, to which he replied:
“It is not just helping, it is necessary. With unified architecture we can easily split up our memory usage the way we want and still have fast GPU access to the bits written by CPU. We are using more memory than PS3 has in total just for the flying cubes! The GPU and compute shaders are also being heavily utilized for a lot of things.
“For example, all of the geometry generation (for the cubes and levels), the physics and collisions for the cubes, the particle mayhem you unleash with your Overdrive or Bomb; all of that is being done in compute shaders. There is still plenty of CPU power left over (currently we’re cruising at around 50% CPU usage during gameplay), but with the GPU and compute shaders doing all the fireworks, we do not really even need it,” he added.
We also asked him what kind of crazy weapons we can expect and whether the the number of levels has been finalized.
“We’re planning on having 3 different selectable ships in the game, and each one will sport a different weapon type. Like Stardust HD, the traditional boost and smart bombs will also make a comeback, and this time we’ve also given the player an Overdrive ability. Basically, by collecting green ‘energy’ cubes the enemies drop, the player will be able to build up his Overdrive bar and – once full – ultimately activate it to unleash a super-powerful beam attack.
“We’re planning to have 5 levels available in the main game, and each will have its unique own style, enemy encounters, and geometry for the player to break apart,” he said.
RESOGUN will be available on day one of the PlayStation 4′s launch and will support remote play with the PlayStation Vita.

Resogun Co-op Detailed, More Ships Revealed

I’m here today on behalf of Housemarque and XDEV Studio Europe to squeeze in one more update before the official Resogun and PS4 launch on Friday. How time flies!
Every PlayStation console has delivered great shoot-em-ups, and I can’t think of anyone better qualified than the team at Housemarque to continue this tradition on PS4. Coming from the creators of the critically acclaimed Super Stardust games for PS3 and PS Vita, Resogun is a pure arcade action game with addictive and challenging play, mesmerizing special effects, co-op multiplayer, and the biggest explosions ever.
In response to requests that we’ve read in various forums online, the video above shows more gameplay from each of the game worlds that Mikael from Housemarque covered in the previous update.

If you watched the movie carefully, you’ll see that it featured three different ships.
Cunningly, each ship in Resogun has different strengths and weaknesses that suit different play styles, so you’ll need to try them all out to discover what suits you the best.
The Ferox is balanced in all areas, making it the easiest ship to start playing with. Nemesis is the most agile ship, making it perfect for flashy and acrobatic boost kills. Phobos is the least agile, but has the most powerful overdrive beam, making it the perfect choice for filling the screen with special effects that PS3 can only dream of.
All of the ships really come into their own in the co-op multiplayer mode where you can use different combinations of ships to play with a lot of style. And because each ship leads you to play Resogun differently, there are Trophies for completing the game with each ship, and some of the other Trophies will be somewhat easier to unlock with a particular ship than others.
Resogun will be one of the first games featured on PlayStation Plus at the launch of PS4, meaning that it’s available for free to all subscribers during the offer period. If you’re not a subscriber, Resogun will also available to purchase on PlayStation Store for just $14.99.

Resogun: Defenders Expansion Pack Revealed

Hey there, Resogun fans. Ian Pickles from XDEV Studio Europe here with some big Resogun news coming straight from our good friends at Housemarque.
As some of you may have seen in our last update, we’ve been busy working on the final expansion pack for Resogun, and are pleased to announce that Resogun: Defenders will be with you in early 2015. The Defenders DLC will be $4.99, and is also included in the Season Pass if you’ve already pre-purchased the content.

We’re really excited about this expansion and can’t wait to share some more details with you over the next few weeks. What we can share right now is that the expansion will feature 2 all-new game modes — Protector and Commando — new ships, and all new planets featuring some of our most detailed artwork to date.
We’ll also be releasing a major content patch for all players alongside the expansion pack. This patch, code named “Challengers” will update the game with new challenges and feats stretching across all existing game modes and will let you earn challenge points to increase your rank as a Resogun pilot. The patch is a free update for all Resogun PS4 owners.

What’s more is that we’re very pleased to announce that both the content patch and expansion will be available to play this weekend exclusively at PlayStation Experience in Vegas!
