Xbox One: Astro headsets will continue to work in Dolby Digital, says manufacturer

We heard yesterday that Xbox One’s digital optical out will only deliver stereo sound to headsets until after launch, but now, manufacturer Astro says that its headsets will still deliver surround sound regardless.

We reported on the Dolby issue yesterday, during which Microsoft’s Albert Penello confirmed surround sound support after Xbox One’s launch.

Now, in a statement to Eurogamer, an Astro spokesperson wrote, ”

“Microsoft’s decision to drop Dolby encoding on their SPDIF [Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format] output at launch does have ramifications for ASTRO’s products. While our products do not process DTS signals, we do have on-board Dolby encoding in both our A50 Wireless Transmitter as well as our Wired MixAmp Pro.”

The site adds that players will still need to opt for stereo sound when using its headsets, but that the MixAmps device will encode the sound using Dolby ProLogic 2, converting it into a simulated 7.1 surround sound effect.
